Portage County agricultural operations are significantly overapplying nitrogen above the amount crops can actually take up and remove from the system.
The following is from the Wisconsin Groundwater Coordinating Council Report to the Legislature 2021. Portage County’s percent of private wells over the nitrate standard is actually 24%, putting Portage County at the bottom in the state along with Rock County.
